Its the motorbikes that hit you first when you arrive in Vietnam - they are everywhere. Pavements arent for walking on, theyve for parking your scooter on! New for this tour, our hotel in Hanoi was in the Old Quarter and well positioned to visit the many markets/shops and also our cooking class, which proved to be a great hit.
Zipping out to Kings Island golf course on a speed boat and being met by our keen and eager caddies was our first experience of golf there. It took most of us the first round to get used to having a caddy look after you, but we soon all got to enjoy the support and guidance the caddies gave us on all the courses.
Halong Bay and the cruise around this world heritage area was fascinating and surreal due to the cloud cover, a result of the cold air from China meeting the warm air coming up from the south.
Da Nang was next where we probably played the two most technically challenging courses, Montgomerie and Da Nang Beach. Hoi An was beautiful and we all enjoyed our stay there with its more holiday laid back vibe. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) was next where you could feel more of the influence of the west. Visiting the War museum and the Cu Chi tunnels gave insight into the terrifying conflict that was the Vietnam War. We all enjoyed playing Long Thanh and the Vietnam Country Club.
Our last stop was Siem Reap in Cambodia, our fourth base and again very different from the others. Angkor Wat Temple is amazing and covers a vast area. We had two more rounds to play here, at Phokeethra and at Angkor Golf club. A late tee-off at Phokeethra meant that we were playing through the heat of the day and when it gets to 42c, golf is a struggle! Fortunately, the day at Angkor Golf club was cooler when the overall tour competition was to be decided. A shoot out was needed, as both the Women and the Men had ties for first place! Well done to Scott and Helen for being the winners on the day and commiserations to Lynn and Dan who were very worthy runners up. A great tour with a great group of people. We will be running this tour again in March 2017.
